On the monitors overhead, Pig, wearing a headset and carrying a clipboard runs desperately around what appears to be the back-stage area of a theater. He seems to be having an animated conversation with Engineer Elephant and Builder Beaver in the background and it's apparent from their body language that things are very wrong. Maestro Bird, oblivious to Pig's challenges is confidently displaying the well-organized regular performance schedule and the usual cast with pride as he appears on screen to welcome us to what will surely be an unprecedented cultural spectacle. Harried Pig, clearly full of admiration for Maestro Bird and eager to please runs up to warn Maestro Bird about the unfolding disaster that will surely derail his show. The theater is all wrong, the talent is nowhere to be found, and they haven’t rehearsed the final number, but the Maestro Bird, who ignores worldly affairs, pays no attention to these 'trivial matters' and dismisses him. Main Show:Guests move into the haphazardly constructed theater. The seats face the backstage area instead of the stage. The orchestra pit is constructed of rickety vertical bleachers and just a handful of animals with strange-looking instruments are ready to play. With a combination of media and live elements the show unfolds as the bare-bones stage crew works furiously to finish sets and support the action with each act. A running gag throughout the show will be the increasingly nervous Maestro Bird introducing an impressive-sounding act only to have Pig inform him that the performers were unavailable and quickly grab from the available pool of "talent". The Royal Flamingo Ballet is replaced by Captain D.F. Squire, a retired flying squirrel and aging aerial ace. The Imperial Crocodile Dragon Dancers are replaced by Uncle Chow, a snail and an accomplished equestrian with his stallion Moonlight, Chimpzent Van Goh puts on a Vegas-style speed painting demonstration, and finally the renowned Royal Academy Choir is replaced by…Donkeys. Every moment of the show compromises Maestro Bird's pride, as well as the already rickety theater as bit by bit the show falls apart. Water effects, smoke and air puffs hit the audience and enhance the fun chaos. Finally, ashamed and defeated by the offerings on display Maestro Bird prepares to quit… and then the braying donkeys are silenced by an angelic voice. Shy Pig has stepped up to save his mentor, the Maestro Bird. Moved to tears by the beautiful voice Maestro quickly springs into action, turning the Donkeys and stage crew into a spectacular percussion section, using techniques inspired by 'Stomp' and 'Blue Man Group' to create a truly incredible and uplifting final number about rising above challenges and doing the best with what we have. The joyful singing and stomping literally bring down the house as all of the performers appear on stage for the grand finale.
