Strict use of scripts:โPrinciples of life
The book states: "Imagine life as a game. Every problem I face is a puzzle to solve. By solving these puzzles, I gain a gem, which is a principle. It helps me avoid the same issues in the future. Continuously collecting such gems can enhance my decision-making abilities. This way, I can progress to a higher level of the game, where the challenges become more difficult and the stakes grow larger." The book records hundreds of such principles; letโs share a few that have significantly impacted heardly.
How one views pain and failure determines whether a person evolves or perishes. Those who truly understand the rules of the game know that pain is a signal of evolution. Whether it's physical pain from exercising or emotional suffering, these are merely signals indicating that your body and mind are undergoing a transformation. Consider the pain you are currently facing, whether in work or life. You have two choices: 1. Avoid it, letting it manifest in a more unhealthy way; 2. Actively feel it, analyze its roots, listen to its demands, and find the path of evolution behind those demands. The book states: "Pain plus reflection equals progress. Feeling pain is your fortune because it prompts you to seek solutions to move forward. Pain is a signal. The quality of your life will depend on the choices you make during these painful moments."
Growth comes from two sources: discovering something you previously didn't know or realizing that what you thought you knew was wrong. However, everyone has a sense of pride and shame. To avoid material discomfort can propel our growth, but refusing to acknowledge it becomes a barrier. To eliminate this barrier, one must accept their shortcomings and maintain an open mind. The book says: "The two greatest obstacles to reasonable decision-making are your self-awareness and cognitive blind spots."
What is self-awareness? Everyone has two selves: a lower self driven by subconsciousness and emotion, and a higher self that is logical and conscious. All moments of growth are actually contests for control between these two selves. Continuing to read this is a moment where your higher self has gained control. Knowing you'll gain weight yet still eating an entire cake is when your lower self wins.
What are cognitive blind spots? People often cannot grasp what they cannot see, similar to how a colorblind person cannot understand color changes. In most disagreements, both parties firmly believe they are correct, leading to mutual anger. However, one party is usually wrong. Refusing to acknowledge the error means missing out on growth opportunities. When faced with cognitive blind spots, we must learn a skillโthoughtful disagreement. In thoughtful disagreement, your goal is not to convince the other party that you are right, but to understand who is right and decide what to do. Keep a consciousness within your higher self that the other person may know something you do not, and then identify what that is.
How can one live a good life? This may seem like a difficult question, but we only need to clarify two things: 1. Identify what is most authentic to ourselves; 2. Find the path to achieve it.
The two most foolish types of people are those who treat making money as their goal and those who know they cannot attain what they want yet refuse to change or let go. To avoid foolishness, take some time to reflect on where you stand between enjoying life and changing the world. How much do you wish to pursue each? What kind of work would enable you to achieve both? The book says: "Making money as your goal is meaningless because money has no fixed value. Its value comes from what it can buy, but money cannot buy everything. A wiser approach is to first determine what you truly want and what your real goals are, then consider what you need to do to achieve those goals." What we truly desire boils down to two things: meaningful work and meaningful relationships. The book states: "While making money is good, having meaningful work and relationships is far better."
For heardly, meaningful work refers to a mission that I can fully engage in; meaningful relationships refer to those where I deeply care for the other person and they care deeply for me in return.
The beginning of this book details Ray Dalioโs arduous journey in founding Bridgewater Associates, the worldโs largest hedge fund. The latter half records almost all of his life and work principles, which include 21 high-level principles, 139 mid-level principles, and 365 sub-principles. Finally, letโs end todayโs reading with a quote from the book: โThose who make a living from crystal balls are doomed to eat glass shattered on the ground.โ
