Morning in the Yard The sun rise early over the hills of St. Mary, spreading gold light across the little board house where John live with him granny. Rooster crow, goat bleat, and breeze shake the ackee tree in the yard. “John, wake up now,” Granny say. “Sun high, and tings fi do.” John stretch and smile. He love morning time. It smell like fresh earth, bush tea, and hope. Today feel special, though him nah sure why. The Big Mango Tree At the edge of the yard stand one old mango tree—tall, wide, and full of secrets. Granny always tell John, “That tree older than me. Treat it with respect.” John sit under the tree every day after school, reading book or carving little boats from coconut husk. But today, the mango tree look different. One mango shine bright red-gold, like it have sunshine inside. “Mi never see mango so yet,” John whisper. The Talking Breeze As John reach for the mango, the breeze start whisper. “Easy, likkle bwoy,” the wind say soft-soft. John jump back. Him heart beat fast. “Who talk?” “The land talk,” the breeze answer. “And the tree.” John remember Granny words: Listen to nature, and it will guide you. A Test of Kindness The breeze tell John the mango is special. It bring blessing, but only if shared. John think hard. Him could eat it alone, or him could share it with Granny, Miss Lila next door, and the likkle youth dem who always hungry after school. John smile. Him already know the answer. Sharing the Blessing That evening, Granny slice the mango. Juice drip like honey. Everybody get a piece. Laughter fill the yard. Even the mango tree seem happier, leaves dancing in the moonlight. Granny hug John. “Yuh have good heart. Dat more valuable than gold.” John’s Lesson From that day, John grow wiser. He learn that Jamaica land give plenty, but sharing make it richer. The mango tree still stand tall, and every year it bear sweet fruit. And whenever the breeze blow through the yard, John smile, knowing the island always watching over him.
